12: Bedanke Dich bei jemanden, der etwas Gutes tut, was oft unbemerkt bleibt
Jane’s experience with this gift
My eldest wears a brace on his teeth, so we’re frequent visitors to the orthodontist’s practice. And they are a real dream team there! Not just the orthodontists themselves, who are fantastic with my son, but also the team of assistants. It makes such a difference when you’re taken seriously on the phone: supported when you (ahem) forget an appointment and ring up to apologise, or understood when you (ahem again) have got your dates muddled up and have to reschedule.
The thing is, I’d never really said that. So this time, when the orthodontist popped in to say hello while I was waiting for S to be finished, I took the opportunity. It’s funny how it can feel strange to give someone a compliment – I often feel slightly awkward doing it. Perhaps it’s the other person that sends out defensive vibes the moment you say „Oh, there’s something I’ve been meaning to say“? As if they’re expecting criticism?
Anyway, once it was clear that I was offering praise he was really chuffed, and he promised to let the rest of the team know too. Gift given – check!
